How do artist/curator-run galleries and projects defined primarily as sites of communication manifest? What position can and should we occupy in relation to the broader arts ecology, to the commercial art world, to institutionalism? How can we advance emergent discourse via increased interaction on a local, national and international level?
Can adopting and re-purposing existing structures benefit the self-organising artist and curator? How is social capital accrued, by what mechanisms and for what can it be exchanged?
Does participation equal collaboration? Does authorship become fluid in the artist/curator run context?
Is an exhibition an artwork? Is an organisation an artist?
Sluice - run by artists and curators - assumes the form of a collaborative, provocative artwork. The authors of which are everyone that comes into contact with the project.
Sluice strategically adopts structures in order to showcase artist, curator and emergent discourse, projects and galleries.
In addition to our extramural activities, exhibitions, talks, screenings, magazine, we stage a non-profit Biennial in London and a roaming international expo every alternate year:
◾ Sluice_2011 / London
◾ Sluice_2013 / London
◾ Exchange Rates expo 2014 / NYC
◾ Sluice_2015 / London
◾ Exchange Rates expo 2016 / NYC
◾ Sluice Biennial 2017 / London
◾ Exchange Berlin 2018 / London

Sluice exists in different formats and manifests in response to structural requirements.
Sluice is non-institutional and non-profit. If you are unfamiliar with Sluice, read the 'about' section prior to submitting. If you wish to be considered for future Sluice projects please drop us a line.
Sluice magazine exists to contextualise the artist-led as the primary site of art as praxis. Sluice broadly explores the impact of the societal and economic environment on the arts and vice versa. Within this framework each edition of the biannual magazine is based on a different thematic focus.
Sluice magazine has a broad voice, being writen by academics (we have a peer reviewed element), artists and curators. If you're interested in writing for the Sluice magazine drop us a line and we'll send you a copy of our editorial guidelines.
2020
Sluice is based on two central tenets, that artists are part of the community and that at its best artist-led culture is about retaining a clear thread between conception, development, production, display and consumption. As such, artist-led culture is innately tied to the social, political and economic environment in which it exists. Sluice commons will focus on projects and artists that embody this idea of culture as an integrated social organism.
Further information will be available soon.
The Sluice Gallery existed as a physical space from 2017 to 2019. Periodically, when it's absolutely essential Sluice stages peripatetic exhibitions. We work predominantly with artist/curator-run projects. Sometimes we also work with independent curators and artists to stage ambitious group and (occasionally) solo exhibitions.

Sluice is comprised of a core team, a selection of informal advisors, the ever changing cast of participating galleries and projects, the artists that run those projects and the artists those projects work with, and finally all the people that have worked with Sluice over the years, these include:
